What Is Counselling?

Counselling relates to professional aid and support for psychological or personal issues.  The counselling process tends to address the intellectual and behavioral aspects of the client.  With its central focus on current issues, counselling may be brief, goal orientated, and solution focused in nature.  The therapeutic relationship is formed to facilitate trust and safety for clients.

Psychotherapy provides support for psychological issues through psychological treatment as opposed to medicinal.  It accesses deeper layers of the mind, the underlying issues attached to presented problems, and the origins of suffering.  Clients can then understand how the past has influence their present day behaviour, and how early developmental experiences shaped their personality. 

It can reveal the basis by which the individual’s reality is defined, and the types of roles and relationships they choose.  The process involved is a key in uncovering latent meaning to unresolved issues, and in reclaiming one’s identity and self worth.
